Rodeph Shalom - Days of Learning: This Terrible True Thing

Hear from Jenny Laden, a life-long RS member who will discuss writing her debut novel, This Terrible True Thing, as quoted by Rabbi Maderer during Shabbat services. Jenny will discuss learning a new craft to tell her story and the larger story of AIDS in the 1990’s using drawings and poetry alongside prose. She is thrilled to be returning to the RS Community Room where she wrote much of her book while her daughter was in Berkman Mercaz Limud on Sundays! Book purchase and signings available after the talk. Dinner will be provided.

Book Event at Main Point Books

Main Point Books welcomes author Jenny Laden and her YA novel "This Terrible True Thing: A Visual Novel." This heartbreaking multimedia debut is filled with drawings, poems, and journal entries, drawing on the author's own experience to create a story of grief and transcendence. She'll be joined by special guest Cordelia Jensen, author of "Skyscraping" and "The Way the Light Bends."

This event will be held in the lower level at Main Point Books. Reservations are requested via Eventbrite; walk-ins are welcome. Books can be purchased in advance via Eventbrite or the store's website, and wlll be available at the event. Signed copies can be mailed to the U.S.

Terrible, Brave and True: An author conversation about the influence of life change on the creative process

Join Life Coach and Author, Naomi Vladeck and Author and Artist Jenny Laden in a special author conversation on Saturday, September 23 at 5pm.

During this event, Naomi will share stories and practices from her new book Braving Creativity, Artists Who Turn the Scary, Thrilling, Messy Path of Change into Courageous Transformation and invite author Jenny Laden, to share how her experience of losing her father to AIDS and a deep desire to expand the narrative of AIDS history influenced the creative process that led to the writing and illustration of her YA visual novel, This Terrible True Thing. 

The evening includes readings by both authors, and a facilitated Q and A.

As he sickens, and AIDS starts to claim the lives of his friends, Danielle searches for silver linings while trying to balance paralyzing fear, grief, her social life, and schoolwork — capturing all the feelings as adolescence and some hard facts collide.
